For a pair of individuals who have been cemented in Saskatoon’s football scene, they are finding out that coaching can lead to great unexpected experiences.
Joel Lipinski and Tom Schnitzler have both played in the CJFL, U Sports and the CFL. For Lipinski, coaching has opened a door to an opportunity he thought at one time wouldn’t be possible. Schnitzler is guiding one of the city’s most storied high school programs ensuring it upholds the traditions of the past.
Lipinski is best known as the Co-owner and Head Strength and Conditioning Coach of Ignite Athletics located on the Gordie Howe Sports Complex grounds. He is also the Defensive Coordinator for Football Canada’s Men’s Flag Football team. On August 16, he helped Canada win a bronze medal at Worlds and qualify for the 2028 Summer Olympics to be held in Los Angeles.
Our first main feature for the September upload of “Howe Happenings” is a story on Lipinski. He talks about what it was like to see one of his defensive players make the play that sealed an overtime victory in the Bronze Medal game at Worlds that locked up a berth to the Olympics. Lipinski chats about what it is like to work with head coach and famed CFL coach Paul LaPolice and how special it is to know that he will go to the Olympics.
Our second main feature is a story on Schnitzler. He talks about what it was like to take over the role as Head Coach of the Holy Cross High School Crusaders football team from all-time coaching great Scott Hundseth. Schnitzler chats about the coaching influences he had as a player over the years and winning the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association’s 6A Championship Game last year at Saskatoon Minor Football Field.
