Griffin Sander is no stranger to Gordie Howe Sports Complex grounds.
During his high school days, he was slinging passes as a quarterback for the Bishop James Mahoney High School Saints Football Team and with various academy teams run under Saskatoon Minor Football’s academy program at Saskatoon Minor Football Field. When he joined the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Football Team in the fall of 2022, it looked like it might be a handful of years before Sander took the field for any type of game at SMF Field.
A year ago, the CJFL’s storied Saskatoon Hilltops ran into a tonne of injuries at the quarterback. A reach out was made to Sander, and he moved over from the Huskies to the Hilltops.
With the Hilltops, Sander came off the bench to power the Hilltops to a huge comeback victory over their provincial rivals the Regina Thunder at Mosaic Stadium in Regina. That allowed the Hilltops to host the CJFL Championship Game – the Canadian Bowl – at SMF Field. In that contest, Sander came off the bench to play a steady hand guiding the Hilltops to a thrilling 21-18 victory over the Okanagan Sun marking the 24th time Saskatoon became CJFL champions.
Our main feature for the August upload of “Howe Happenings” is a feature piece on Sanders. He talks about his memories of one turned into one of the most memorable campaigns of his football life in 2025 and entering the 2026 season as the Hilltops starter.
