Great summer days don’t disappoint in photo roundup

The days of summer inevitably lead to images of action on the diamonds at the Gordie Howe Sports Complex.

With Saskatoon being home to great baseball and softball scenes, our baseball and softball diamonds are often the places to be during the summer months. Keeping that in mind, it should come as no surprise that the July 2023 upload for Howe Happenings contains two special dugout stories from the diamonds.

Our main feature story for July is on catcher Osher Stromberg of the Saskatoon Cubs, who are the defending Under-18 AAA Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League champions. Stromberg’s story is a classic tale of the smaller player who can get the job done.

The 16-year-old Stromberg stands 5-foot-4 and weighs 130 pounds. In most sports, the smaller players often get looked down upon.

Stromberg has quickly built a reputation of being one of the SPBL’s best catchers, and he can play multiple aspects of the game well. With Stromberg as the Cubs field leader, they are again having a solid campaign posting a 16-5 regular season record.

Our second main feature story focuses on one of the most popular and successful softball coaches in Saskatoon in Dave McCullough. On June 14, McCullough was announced as being part of the 2023 class going into the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame.

McCullough got into the softball coaching his two sons Devon and Darren and daughter Brielle (McCullough) Frohaug. The dugout boss has made many memories in softball, and he took time to reflect a little on his career in the sport.

You can still find McCullough on the softball diamonds at the Complex coaching either Devon and Darren with the Saskatoon Angels senior men’s team or Brielle with the Saskatoon G-Force senior women’s team.

Along with the pieces on Stromberg and McCullough, July’s “Howe Happenings” upload includes a photo roundup that brings you great images from the summer days on our grounds.

You can find these items on the “Howe Happenings” blog at howehappenings306.blogspot.com.

New content will be released on the ninth day of each month. We hope you will enjoy the stories that make up the posts on the “Howe Happenings” blog.
