Athletics in top gear as spring season rolls in photo roundup

“Busy” has been the key word these days on the Gordie Howe Sports Complex grounds, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

During the spring months, all our facilities are usually hosting an event on a nightly basis. The baseball and softball diamonds are usually full with various league games. Saskatoon Minor Football Field often hosts various programming from Saskatoon Minor Football and practices and games involving the WWCFL’s Saskatoon Valkyries.

Our busiest facilities have been the Track and Field Track and the K+S Potash Canada Multi-Sports Centre. Both have staged countless track and field meets pretty much since the start of May.

The track and field scene in the local area has a rich history. One of the newest rising stars in that season has been Hanley, Sask., product Callie Steen, who competes with the Riversdale Athletics Club.

Steen primarily competed in water skiing during the summer months and figure skating during the winter months before making track and field her main focus about two years ago. She has excelled in the 1,500-metre and 3,000-metre middle distance events.

During her rapid rise in the sport, Steen has been to major national age group meets in track and field. In December of 2022, Steen signed on to join the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks Women’s Track and Field team, which competes in the NCAA Division I ranks.

Our main story for the June 2023 upload of the “Howe Happenings” blog is a feature piece on Steen. Steen recently won gold and silver medals in her final appearance at the SHSAA’s Track and Field Provincial Championships, which were held June 2 and 3 at the Track and Field Track.

Along with the piece on Steen, June’s “Howe Happenings” upload includes a photo roundup that shows the track and field season in top gear and the spring season as a whole rolling along.

You can find these items on the “Howe Happenings” blog at howehappenings306.blogspot.com.

New content will be released on the ninth day of each month. We hope you will enjoy the stories that make up the posts on the “Howe Happenings” blog.
