Story of Going Yard Training Centre’s history shared too

The family at the Gordie Howe Sports Complex grew by one sport recently.

On November 1, 2020, the Saskatoon Short Mat Club debuted with an open house at the Indoor Training Centre. The Saskatoon Short Mat Club is governed by Bowls Saskatchewan, and the sport is basically lawn bowling indoors.

The sport is also similar to curling and requires a lot of precision and skill when it comes to shot making. Robert Hackett, who is the president of the Saskatoon Short Mat Club, and Janelle Phillips, who is the treasurer of the Saskatoon Short Mat Club, took time to explain the ins and outs of the short mat game and just how far you can go with the sport.

Hackett was able to take a trip to Manchester, England, about five years ago because of the sport.

The Short Mat Club was holding regular games until having to a pause due to Provincial Health Orders that came into effect at the end of November of 2020. The Short Mat Club crew is already looking forward to the day they can resume game action at the Indoor Training Centre.

The second story was a piece that originally ran on our main website on our friends from the Going Yard Training Centre. Going Yard was established in 2013 and continues to build a great reputation in helping baseball players get better at the game and being good persons off the field.

You can find these stories on the “Howe Happenings” blog at howehappenings306.blogspot.com.

New content will be released on the ninth day of each month. We hope you will enjoy the stories that make up the posts on the “Howe Happenings” blog.
