Mitchell Picton enjoys that his football identity before suiting up for the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders is never forgotten in Saskatoon.

This past April 22 to 24, Picton was guest coach for the Playground To Pros camp hosted by Saskatoon Minor Football at the Indoor Training Centre. The Playground To Pros camp is the annual Easter time camp that helps with developing skills and fundamentals in players at the grassroots level. Picton has been a guest coach at the last four annual Playground To Pros camps starting in 2022.

When he arrives in Saskatoon, he often encounters people in the city’s football community who remember him for the five seasons he played receiver for the University of Regina Rams from 2013 to 2017. Now a sure handed pass catcher with the Roughriders, Picton still gets into friendly jab sessions regarding the Rams rivalry in U Sports with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies every time he visits Saskatoon.

With that in mind, he looks forward to working with the young players the most when he coaches the Playground To Pros camp. Picton said he remembers what it was like being a young player growing up and jumps at the opportunity to give back to the sport.

A story on Picton is our main piece for the May upload of our “Howe Happenings” blog. In the piece, Picton goes into what it is like working at the Playground To Pros camp alongside a number of local area players from the CFL. He also talked about how great his visits to the Gordie Howe Sports Complex grounds have been.

To go with the story on Picton, May’s “Howe Happenings” upload includes a photo roundup that features images from Softball Saskatchewan’s final tryout session for its men’s Canada Summer Games team. Along with happenings at the Indoor Training Centre, the photo roundup also featured action from Saskatoon Minor Football Field, the Glenn Reeve Fields and the Track and Field Track as the spring seasons for various sports got underway.
