How many 16-year-olds do you know that can be a star player and coach a team at the same time in any sport?

The Gordie Howe Sports Complex grounds have been graced by one such person. Adley Tomlenovich is an elite level quarterback in flag football who has already represented Canada on the international stage. She also took on being the head coach of her own NFL 5-on-5 Youth Flag Football team.

Tomlenovich, who is a Grade 11 student at St. Joseph High School, has been playing flag football since she was in Grade 3. While growing up, she also took part in hockey, basketball, baseball and dance before flag football won out as her main sporting passion.

She plays in Saskatoon Minor Football’s Toon Squad League. On top of quarterbacking teams locally, Tomlenovich has also stepped on the field to throw passes for Team Saskatchewan twice at nationals and called signals for Team Canada at USA Football’s Junior International Cup in July of 2024 in the under-15 age group.

To go along with those experiences, Tomlenovich was part of the inaugural group that took part in the Institute of Saskatchewan Football program offered by SMF. She has been a member of the SMF’s Toon Squad flag travel teams the past two years, where she has gone down to Florida to participate in game action.

This past September and October, Tomlenovich became the head coach for one of SMF’s NFL 5-on-5 Youth Flag Football teams. She guided a female team where all the players were attending Grade 6 in school.

Our main feature for the December upload of “Howe Happenings” is on Tomlenovich. She discusses her experiences as a player in flag football and what she likes most about the sport. The high-level pivot also tells the story about how she became a head coach for an NFL 5-on-5 Youth Flag Football team and what it was like to guide a team as a head coach for the first time in her life.

To go with the feature on Tomlenovich, December’s “Howe Happenings” upload has a photo roundup that is anchored by photos of the Saskatoon Hilltops winning the CJFL title at Saskatoon Minor Football Field. The photo roundup also has pictures of action hitting high gear at the Indoor Training Centre with photos coming from baseball, cricket, softball and ultimate disc.

You can find these items on the “Howe Happenings” blog at howehappenings306.blogspot.com.

New content will be released normally on the ninth day of each month. We hope you will enjoy the stories that make up the posts on the “Howe Happenings” blog.
