The Saskatoon Lions Speed Skating Club is finally going to host the John Sands Classic Long Track Meet once again.

Since being formed back in 1942, the Lions have hosted their own long track meet on an annual basis at the Clarence Downey Speed Skating Oval. Due to factors beyond the club’s control with regards to weather and dealing with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic that has gripped the world, the Lions last hosted their home long track meet back in January of 2019.

That will all change this coming Saturday and Sunday as the Lions will host the John Sands Classic once again. Race action is slated to run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days, and the weather is predicted to be around -7 C, which is race day perfect for speed skating.

An advancer story about the John Sands Classic is the main piece in January’s upload of the “Howe Happenings” blog. Veteran elite level Lions skater Serena Dallaire talked about what it meant to her to skate in the club’s home long track meet as a young beginning skater and what it is like to participate in that event now as a veteran skater.

Veteran Lions coach Tim Comfort talked about how much it meant to the club to skate at the Oval over the years for both competitions and practices and how the place feels serene. Besides the advancer for the John Sands Classic, we have a photo roundup that shows how some cool beauty sites can occur on the Complex grounds during the winter months.
