Sands speed skating meet leads of photo roundup

With cricket holding the distinction of being the world’s second most popular sport, Shaurya Patel’s name might be one that could come up again and again long into the future.

The 16-year-old, who is a Grade 11 student at Centennial Collegiate, had an exciting 2025 when it comes to the sport. Last May, Cricket Canada announced Patel was a probable for the Canadian under-19 World Cup team and was to attend a preparation camp in Vancouver. After attending that camp, Patel was announced this past July as being on the shortlist of 32 players for the main selection camp for the Canadian under-19 World Cup team in Toronto.

While Patel didn’t make the Canadian under-19 World Cup team, it was still a great accomplishment to get the opportunity to go through the journey to make that squad. Patel had been playing cricket since he was about three or four years old and joined Cricket Saskatoon’s junior program in 2023 after his family moved to the city.

During the winter months, he has been part of Cricket Saskatoon’s contingent of junior players who have come out to train at the Indoor Training Centre on the Gordie Howe Sports Complex grounds. That included helping out at Cricket Saskatoon’s Indoor Cricket Tournament for youth aged players held on December 20, 2025 at the Indoor Training Centre.

Our main feature for the January upload of “Howe Happenings” is on Patel. The piece goes into Patel’s journey in the sport of cricket and the potential he has for playing that game well into the future.

To go with the feature on Patel, January’s “Howe Happenings” upload has a photo roundup that is led off by photos from the John Sands Classic Long Track Meet hosted by the Saskatoon Lions Speed Skating Club at the Clarence Downey Speed Skating Oval. The photo roundup also has pictures of action continuing in high gear at the Indoor Training Centre with photos coming from baseball, cricket, football, softball and ultimate disk. There are some scenes from the ski trails on Glenn Reeve Fields too.

You can find these items on the “Howe Happenings” blog at howehappenings306.blogspot.com.

New content will be released normally on the ninth day of each month. We hope you will enjoy the stories that make up the posts on the “Howe Happenings” blog.
