First women’s cricket festival for Saskatchewan leads photo roundup

When the players from the Saskatoon Ultimate Disc-Sport Society (SUDS) come to the Gordie Howe Sports Complex grounds, they make the Indoor Training Centre arguably the most upbeat place in Saskatoon to be.

SUDS is the organization that oversees the sport of ultimate frisbee for Saskatoon and area. While ultimate was created in the late 1960s, SUDS had its origin in 1994 as an ultimate club. In 2002, it became a non-profit organization and morphed into the sports body it is today.

SUDS offers leagues, events and development opportunities all year long. The leagues have a variety of formats including mixed and single-gender offerings, four-versus-four, five-versus-five and seven-versus-seven games, indoor turf and outdoor grass locations and recreational and competitive options. The sports body has regularly used the Indoor Training Centre pretty much since it opened in 2019 on the Gordie Howe Sports Complex grounds.

In our main feature for the January upload of “Howe Happenings,” Dani Bouvier, who is a player and the Vice-President of SUDS, and Anna-Lise Hodgins, who is the General Manager of SUDS, go into the history of the ultimate organization, the experiences that the sport can provide and the ultra-positive atmosphere created by the ultimate sports community. They both delved into their unassuming respective starts in the sport that have created a lifetime passion.

To go with the feature on SUDS, January’s “Howe Happenings” upload includes a photo roundup that is anchored by images from the CRIIIO Women’s Cricket Festival that was held at the Indoor Training Centre on December 21, 2024. It was a first a first for Saskatchewan as a province. The pictures also include photos from baseball, football, public skating, speed skating, softball and skiing.

You can find these items on the “Howe Happenings” blog at howehappenings306.blogspot.com.

New content will be released on the ninth day of each month. We hope you will enjoy the stories that make up the posts on the “Howe Happenings” blog.
