The Carnduff Southeast Steelers made history and some familiar faces from Saskatoon’s softball scene helped them do it.

On Sunday, August 3, at Bob Van Impe Stadium, the Steelers blanked Equipe Quebec 6-0 in the title game of Softball Canada’s Women’s Canadian Fast Pitch Championship. The win marked the third consecutive year the Steelers, who went 8-0 in this year’s tournament, won Softball Canada women’s title.

The Carnduff side became the first Saskatchewan-based team to win three consecutive Canadian women’s titles. The Saskatoon Imperials from 1969 and 1970 are the only other Saskatchewan-based team to win the Canadian women’s title in back-to-back years.

The Steelers contain a mix of players from veteran pros, young stars, athletes from across Saskatchewan and Abbotsford, B.C., product Katie Korstrom, who has been part of Softball Canada’s national team system.

Saskatoon product Lyndsey Koscielski is the Steelers ageless shortstop, and Weyburn product Jorde Chartrand, who is a familiar face on the Gordie Howe Sports Complex grounds, is a young star pitcher. Together, they exemplify the dynamic that has allowed the Steelers dynasty to take place.

A story on Steelers latest national title win focusing on Koscielski and Chartrand is our main feature for the August upload of our “Howe Happenings” blog. In the piece, you will hear from both players what it was like to win this national title at the current stages of their respective lives.

To go with the story on Koscielski and Chartrand backing the Steelers national title win, August’s “Howe Happenings” has a photo roundup that showcases the Saskatoon Cubs winning the 18U AAA Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League title at Cairns Field. The photo roundup also features more action from baseball as well as football, softball and track and field.
