The University of Saskatchewan Women’s Softball Program ensures local players have a chance to combine academics and high-level play in their sport at home.

The squad first hit the field in 2008 winning the Canadian Collegiate Softball Association championship. Another CCSA title came in 2016, and the club captured five Western Collegiate Softball Association crowns coming in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2016.

Softball players in Saskatoon and across Saskatchewan often dream of one day playing in NCAA Division I. As their high school years start to wind down, those dreams change.

Players will elect to stay in their home city or home province for a number of reasons. Those often include family reasons and the fact one can enroll in a large number of strong programs at U of S.

In our main feature story for the September upload of “Howe Happenings,” we check in with members of the U of S Softball team. They talk about how important it is to have the U of S squad here in Saskatoon.

The U of S Women’s Softball makes its home at the softball diamonds on the Gordie Howe Sports Complex grounds. The club is hosting a slate of WCSA league games at Bob Van Impe Stadium and Joe Gallagher Field on Saturday, September 9 and Sunday, September 10. U of S plays at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Bob Van Impe Stadium on both days.

Along with the piece on the U of Saskatchewan Women’s Softball Program, September’s “Howe Happenings” upload includes a photo roundup that sees the summer season have a great finish, while the fall season took off in a strong fashion. The photo roundup teases about a possible milestone Saskatoon Hilltops fifth-year star power running back Boston Davidsen might hit this season.
