Badgers take centre stage in photo roundup
Written by Gordie Howe Sports Complex staff
When talking informally to the family that makes up the Gordie Howe Sports Complex, there seemed to be a consensus that a feature story had to be done at some point on Carter Beck.
Last year, Beck shot to star status locally as a first year Western Canadian Baseball League player taking the field for the expansion Saskatoon Berries. He captured awards from the WCBL as the circuit’s Rookie of the Year and Most Outstanding Canadian. On January 6, the Berries announced Beck as their first returnee for the 2025 campaign.
Before joining the Berries, Beck had been making trips to the Gordie Howe Sports Complex grounds on a regular basis. He was a member of the South East Twins under-18 AAA Team and he often stepped on to Cairns Field and Leakos Field to play against Saskatoon’s three Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League members at that level in the Cubs, Diamondbacks and Giants.
After Beck became a member of the Berries, he mingled with Complex staff members and coaches, athletes and staffers from various sports bodies on the sports park’s grounds. Anyone that crossed paths with Beck said he was an outstanding person and that it would be fitting to have a Howe Happenings feature done on him.

The idea of doing a story about Beck was floated past Berries head coach Joe Carnahan in February. Carnahan was all in and said it was a fantastic idea. He said to feel free to track him down to talk about Beck when he was overseeing a Berries Academy practice at the Indoor Training Centre.
With that lead up, a feature story on Beck is the main story for the April upload of Howe Happenings. The interview visit with Beck was outstanding, so it feels like that is the best tease to leave about the piece.
To go with the feature on Beck, April’s “Howe Happenings” upload includes a photo roundup that features images of the defending senior division 1 provincial champion Saskatoon Badgers Rugby Club. Also for the photo roundup, action closed out on the ski trails that that run across the Glenn Reeve Fields and continued to motor along at the Indoor Training Centre for various sports including baseball, cricket and softball.
