Valkyries winter camp anchors packed photo roundup
Written by Gordie Howe Sports Complex staff
Olivia Prokopchuk is a mainstay on the Gordie Howe Sports Complex grounds.
The 17-year-old power hitter and first base infielder has been a regular at the Indoor Training Centre during the fall and winter months sharpening up her skills often playing with the 222’s Fastpitch program. During the spring and summer months, you can find her on one of the Complex’s softball diamonds playing for a local area team.
Prokopchuk might also be one of the most personable and friendly athletes that has ever graced the Complex’s grounds, and the storied sports park has seen a lot of personable and friendly athletes over the decades. There was a lot of joy when Prokopchuk signed on with the University of South Carolina-Union Bantams Women’s Softball team located in Union, South Carolina, this past November. A lot of hearts dropped when Prokopchuk tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her right knee during a training session in late 2024.

Overall, it seemed fitting to finally catch up with Prokopchuk and make her a main feature for the “Howe Happenings” blog. A story on Prokopchuk is the main feature for the February upload of “Howe Happenings.” In the piece, Prokopchuk goes into how she got involved with softball, her love for the game, her biggest influences in helping her in the sport, signing with the Bantams and working to comeback from her ACL tear to play for Team Saskatchewan at the Canada Summer Games to be held this coming August in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
To go with the feature on Prokopchuk, February’s “Howe Happenings” upload includes a photo roundup that is anchored by images from the Saskatoon Valkyries Winter Camp held this past January 26 at the Indoor Training Centre. The pictures also include photos from baseball, football, rugby, speed skating and softball.
You can find these items on the “Howe Happenings” blog at howehappenings306.blogspot.com.
New content will be released on the ninth day of each month. We hope you will enjoy the stories that make up the posts on the “Howe Happenings” blog.
